Researchers from UTEC’s Department of Energy Engineering, collaborated with the world renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on a project entitled “Air Quality Model and Interactive Web Application for Lima", that seeks to model the concentration levels of contaminants and provide a real time tool for measuring air quality in Metropolitan Lima and Callao.
The tool will consist of a web app that will show the concentration levels of the primary pollutants distributed over space and time in Lima, in addition to measuring them in real time using a system called “‘Real-time Air Quality Monitoring System” which will record them hourly at certain locations that will be different from locations already provided by SENAMHI monitoring stations. As a component of the research project, a UTEC student and teacher will join the MIT team to develop the modeling. It is worth mentioning that SENAMHI has shown its interest in this project from the outset by sending its representatives to attend the ongoing project meetings. “The purpose of this tool is to contribute to the continuous improvement of our city’s quality of life, because air pollution not only affects the environment, it also has an adverse impact on human health”, said Julien Noel, Energy Engineering Academic Program Director at UTEC.
The project entails plans to carry out activities associated with the design, modeling, testing and implementation, both at the UTEC campus in Lima and at MIT’s facilities in Boston, USA. “We plan to launch this tool in eighteen months’ time, and we feel confident that it can be replicated nationally, given that it will be a big contribution to environmental policy management carried out by public entities, said the researcher.
It is worth reminding the reader that last January 2016, this project received a grant from the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) program, a seed funding program of Massachusetts Institute of Technology that seeks to promote global scientific research and to carry out scientific projects originated by leading universities around the world.
